My lesson plans this term will be Geography
based for a group of second grade learners.
Geography can be defined as the
study of the Earth's landscapes, peoples, places, and environments.
For students of all ages, studying geography helps to develop nonfiction reading skills — not only in the studying of maps, but also in the reading materials that are associated with geography. It allows students the chance to explore and understand where they come from, where they live, and all of the places surrounding them.
As their awareness of the world
grows, I hope the learners use their geographic skills to feel a connection
with people they have never met and places they have never been. Geography is
about more than physical maps. It's also about climate, land, animals, people and their diverse cultures. Learners are full of wonder with
questions about the world, so geography is naturally appealing to them.
As I plan my lessons I will consider
geography's five themes—location, place, region, movement, and
human-environment interaction.
I am so happy to see that you are teaching maps! I think one of the worst things about technology is that kids these days don't get to sit in the passenger seat and get told they need to give directions while holding a map that is 10x bigger than them! But all joking aside, map reading is crucial to education. Students will not always get a chance to check their phones for directions and they should still be able to identify their location on a map, regardless of having a little red dot or not.
ReplyDeleteI love that you tied the importance of leaning about geography and maps into also understanding that we are not all the same all around the world! There are so many different cultures, clothing, practices, etc. This is such an important lesson, I am glad you chose this!
ReplyDeleteI did not even think about how learning about geography could help with nonfiction reading skills. Oftentimes, I think of Social Studies as a completely separate animal from ELA or Math. In reality, it encompasses both just like Science does. In geography, you have to use map keys are read about certain landforms. Thank you for opening my eyes to this. It helped me to realize how really important Social Studies is at all levels.
